Comprises Carter's book or journal of events, concentrating particularly on his sleeping habits (1844); Wairarapa Small Farms Association papers (1858-ca 1890); huge scrapbook of newspaper clippings and other papers, mostly relating to the Wellington region but also to London (clippings mostly from the `Wellington independent', `Evening Post' and `New Zealand advertiser') (1848-1868); clippings re Sir Julius Vogel (1884-1886); account book for Taratahi farm (includes other papers) (1861-1868); two scrapbooks of clippings with enclosures relating to the Wairarapa, Carter's time as an MP and related matters (includes copy of petition to persuade Carter to stand as candidate in the provincial council (1857) and `Gazette' (Wellington) with report on 1855 Wellington earthquake and suggestions for improving buildings (1853-1863).
Also includes file re Carter's will, library and other matters, and the New Zealand Institute and the Alexander Turnbull Library (1890-1933)
Includes fragment of a diary in `The book of events, 1844' which describes events on 4-5 Nov 1850 during the voyage of the `Eden' to New Zealand
