This series comprises two hundred and ninety-nine folders of letters, postcards, greeting cards and telegrams written to Lilburn, covering 1933-2001. Accessions up to 1990 comprise seventy folders. There are two additional folders of letters received between 1990-2001 (A92-090, A95-036). Following Douglas Lilburn's death, two hundred and twenty-seven folders of correspondence were added, dating from 1934-2001, with many enclosing his replies or drafts of replies. Enclosures include newsclippings, printed matter and many photographs. Some folders of letters are exclusively from one writer, while others include letters from several writers. Many people wrote to Lilburn - musicians, writers, poets, artists, educators, arts organisations, government and local bodies, students and friends. Of particular note are substantial quantities of letters from John Mansfield Thomson, Rita Angus, Allen Curnow, and many others. Fortunately he kept many of the envelopes, which have been particularly useful in dating the letters and identifying writers. Name entries have not yet been input for each record; however all names included in the 1990 inventory are entered into the scope and contents notes and are searchable by Descriptive Notes, as are any enclosures, which are given in detail. This will be done at a later stage for the most recent accession. Organisations are listed under the name appearing on the letterhead; it is also important to search under those names of organisations with which writers may bave been associated. The significance of this series lies in its strong New Zealand content, although Lilburn received letters from prominent overseas musicians. There are letters to be found as enclosures with items in other series; they have been noted on the inventory. The Subject Files Series also includes letters.
