Description

Photographs relating to the Wanganui District

The first photograph is of a group of 15 men some holding mere and one holding a taiaha and wearing improvised flax skirts with their trousers rolled up, probably a haka group. The second is of eight women and a man sitting or standing near a coffin covered in blankets and kakahu. The women are wearing wreaths made of leaves. The coffin is on the verandah of a house and on the wall behind it is a display of portraits of ancestors each with a fringed cloth over the top edge. The third is of 19 women, one holding a baby, a girl and five men, one in a uniform. The women have thick coats and shawls on and two of the women seated at the front are also wearing wreaths made of leaves. These two are giving a hongi. Although the location is descibed as Wanganui District on the deposit form each photograph also has the name Kaitarakihi stamped on it. Photographer unidentified.
