Assembly hall nearing completion, 33 Humber Street, Island Bay, Wellington. Photograph taken in 1907 by Sydney Charles Smith.
This building was opened in 1907. It was built as an assembly hall, with an auditorium, stage, and dressing rooms. In 1920, the parish of St Francis de Sales (Island Bay), bought it. Until 1931, it was leased out for a variety of purposes, including a skating rink, picture theatre, parish school concerts, and Salvation Army services. In 1931, the parish converted it into The Church of the Holy Name of Jesus. The structure, and the facade, of the church were damaged by an earthquake in 1942. It was bought by Rotowax in 1952 and in 1991 was being used by a film-making company. In 2008 the The building still stood but significantly altered.
