Description: Shows a man and a woman (Marquesans), dressed in European clothes, at a table within a small house. The man is reading an issue of 'Le charivari', while the woman looks over his shoulder as he puzzles over something on the page. Both of them appear to have some facial tattooing; the man wears his hair pulled back in a topknot, and wears feathers in his right ear. The woman wears her hair in a European style The figures in this scene are thought to be derived from those of Maori in Dumont d'Urville's 'Voyage pittaresque autour du monde' (Paris, 1836). In addition, Abel Dupetit-Thourars' 'Isles Marquises' (1843) includes images of Marquesans who are known to be Maori Full caption in French reads: 'Eh bien! mon ami ... tu ne travailles donc pas aujourd'hui? ...- Comment je ne travaille pas! voila plus de cinq heures que je suis sur cette charade ... je ne peux pas en trouver le mot mais bien certainment je ne dinerai pas avant d'avoir fini ma besogne! ...'
