Description: Contains general subject files including papers relating to campaigns, tours, conferences, relationship with other anti-apartheid groups, race relations, liberation movements and dealings with other organisations. Also includes organisational material including correspondence, minutes, correspondence with government, financial reports, publications, clippings and ephemera. Also contains copies, mock-ups and correspondence relating to the first three issues of HART Report produced by Dick Cuthbert in 1992. These reports contain clippings of articles and similar material relating to the situation in South Africa. Source of title - Supplied title Halt All Racist Tours (HART) was established in 1969 to protest against New Zealand' participation in rugby union tours to and from South Africa while that nation operated under an apartheid regime. Intially set up to protest the 1970 tour of South Africa by the All Blacks, HART grew to become a leading national anti-apartheid organisation. The early focus of activity was the sports boycott of South Africa. In later years HART advocated ceasation of all contact with apartheid South Africa. In 1980 HART merged with the National Anti-Apartheid Committee, becoming HART: the New Zealand Anti-Apartheid Movement. At a later stage, a name in use for the organisation was HART Aotearoa. Much relates to observance of the Gleneagles Agreement. Source of title - Supplied Trevor Richards founded Halt All Racist Tours (HART) in 1969 and remained active in the anti-apartheid movement until the 1990s; his papers reflect his work with the movement, which focused particularly on sporting contacts with South Africa, and the organisation behind it. Description: Shows portraits of three black Africans who died in the 1970s, for political reasons: Steve Bantu Biko, Honorary President of the Black People's Convention, died in police detention, 12 September 1977 Comrade Onkgopotse Ramothibi Tiro 22-06-1945 to 1-02-1974, killed by parcel bomb in Kgale, Botswana. He was President of SASM (South African Students' Movement). Mapetla Mohapi, died in police custody, 5th August 1976. He was permanent organiser of SASO (South African Students' Organisation). Dated ca 1981, because the Black Consciousness Movement of Azania newsletter was published in South Africa from 1980. The tour by the Springboks was due to take place in 1981. Percy Bush had earlier addressed the protesters in both Maori and English expressing his opposition to apartheid but pointing out that he had come to see his adopted son play the Springboks. Reproduces a "diagrammatic chart" of the chain of control from Rembrandt Controlling Investment in South Africa to Rothmans Tobacco Co in New Zealand. The Rembrandt Group was headed by Anton Rupert who allegedly had close links with the Nationalist Party of South Africa.
