Description: Very clear views of West Coast gold and coal mines (mainly in the Reefton subdivision), and mining towns, taken by unidentified photographers, except for one of "Wondrous Waiuta New Zealand" Jos. Divis Photo (p 27). Views on various roads include the Reefton to Blackspoint Road, Reefton to Westport Road, the Buller Gorge, the Maruia Road alongside the Inangahua River, Progress Road, and fording a river near Progress Mill. Images relating to mines include a winter picture of the old Wealth (of Nations) waterwheel covered in icicles; and gold batteries at various stages of development. Gold mines include the Progress Mine, Wealth of Nations Mine, Welcome Mine, the Mountain Battery at Boatman's Creek, the Blackwater Mine and the Globe Mine. Coal mines include views of Lanky's Creek Coal Mine, and the Lanky's Creek to Energetic coal tramway showing new bridges and coal miners. One photograph (p 9) shows several men "beach combing" for gold on the West Coast. Description: Two memoranda books include details of expenses for building a cottage, a bakers oven in 1862, rents received (1865-1866), accounts for family's shoes (1867), journey to Hokitika 19-30 October 1865 and recipes There is also a miners right issued to George Innes, Tuapeka (September 1861) and a manuscript of business notes (1860-1866) which includes costing of material in construction of brick house, Cashel Street (1863) and record of work done There is also a copy of Wellington Girls College Reporter, Jubilee number (May 1933) George Innes was a builder who lived at various times in Hokitika, Otago and Christchurch. Description: Comprises folders of letters from David Ziman to his son, Herbert, and to wife, Lena, correspondence with his brother, Jacob Ziman, some newspaper clippings and papers relating to the disposal of his estate after his death. Also includes papers relating to North Blackwater Mines Ltd and the Consolidated Gold Mines Company. Source of title - Supplied Arrangement: Shortly before his death, Herbert Ziman arranged his father's papers in the order as listed. David Ziman, a founding member of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, had his attention drawn to the quartz gold mining potential at Reefton, which in 1895 was in depression. With the Rothschilds backing, Ziman formed the Consolidated Gold Fields of New Zealand Ltd which mined at Reefton until 1951. Description: Collection consists of the papers of William Edward Hay; his wife, Mary Hay; his mother, also Mary Hay and his second son, Charles William Hay. Source of title - Supplied title William Edward and his wife, Mary Hay (nee Tindall) emigrated to Christchurch on the `Mermaid' in 1864. After eighteen months without steady work they moved to Hokitika where William tried his luck at the gold-diggings before taking up a permanent position with the `West Coast Times'. Late in 1871, the family moved to Melbourne but less than a year later they were back in New Zealand living in Dunedin, where William set up in business as a cabinet maker. In 1877, William's mother, Mary and eldest son, Benjamin, a dentist, came out to New Zealand. Shortly afterwards, William shifted to Auckland where he worked on the staff of the `Evening Post'. Description: Comprises transcripts of letters from Henderson to his family in England in which he describes his experiences on board the `Robert Henderson' to Port Chalmers, his life in Dunedin until he went to the West Coast gold diggings from which he took off for Wanganui and Patea where he purchased land and became a farmer. In one letter he writes `If I had my time over again Knew all as now NZ would never have seen Archey' (1875). Accompanied by notes about the Henderson family by W A Lowrie. Description: Photographs of mountains and valleys in the Southern Alps towards the West Coast, chiefly taken by Dr Ebenezer Teichelmann, with the last two images probably taken by Marcel Kurz. The box is entitled "W.A. Kennedy. Dr. T. 4 (Box 22). The images are separated into nine sequences filed in paper folders, with two loose images at the end. The folders are as follows: 1: Complete pan (panorama) of 8 from Pioneer Ridge (nos. 1-22). 2: Callery (nos. 23-30). 3: Pan of 8 of the Lambert Group (from near the head of Lambert Glacier) (nos. 31-38). 4: Pan of 11 from Chancellor Ridge (nos. 39-46). 5: Lower Waiototo (i.e. Waiatoto) Valley (nos. 47-61a). 6: From Craig's Peak (no. 62). 7: odd Pioneer Ridge (nos. 63-70, and 80 (lacking nos. 71-79). 8: Head of Victoria Glacier (nos. 81-83). 9: Upper Waiototo (i.e. Waiatoto) Valley (nos. 84-109). 10: two loose images, now numbered 110 and 111 (originally numbered 103 (Haast from the H.-L col, K. Description: Photographs of the West Coast, with particular emphasis on bridges, gold mining activities, towns, and roads. Photographers mostly unidentified, but two definitely taken by John Tait (p 9-10), and one possibly taken by James Ring (p 20; identified from same photograph in different collection (PA7-51-05)). The bridges include Hungerfords Bridge and Thompson's Bridge, both over the Arahura River, and the Upper Bridge in the Otira Gorge. There is also a view of the Kaniere [i.e. Kanieri] punt for crossing the river. Views of gold mining and mining towns include the Hohonu Water Race Company's flume at Greenstone; the Great Western Company's fluming at Kaniere [i.e. Kanieri]; mining towns at Donoghues and Redman's; Ross; Goldsborough; the Kohinoor claim; and Napoleon Hill, Ahaura, showing various businesses along a narrow street including the Casino de Venise, Baillie Bootmaker, Scandinavian Hotel and the Victoria & Sydney Hotel. A number of views of Hokitika include the town from various angles; Dobson's Memorial (to roading engineer George Dobson who was murdered in 1866); the cemetery with a view of Archibald Bonar Junior's tombstone; the Old Post Office; the Hokitika Wharf; "cutting through the sandspit, Hokitika Bar, Sunday morning 1867"; and the Hokitika River with vessels ashore in 1866. Description: Reminiscences by Harper of his time on the West Coast as a Wesleyan minister covering the period 1864 to 1866, probably written in the 1880s from his diaries. The account is inscribed `To my wife, my companion on the Thames goldfields, together with her father Mr Charles Ingamells whose careful preservation of my diary has made this work possible'. Mentions three month old brother who died from Meningitis. Describes training as a psychiatric nurse and work at Avondale Mental Hospital Auckland, which is now Carrington. After marriage went sharemilking for 5 years until war when she was manpowered onto farm at Komata. Compares conditions for children today with those of her childhood. Refers to Evan Mackie, a spitfire pilot in World War II.
