Description

Steam locomotive 449, Wh class, type 2-6-2T, built by Manning Wardle. Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber, circa 1906. Godber's son William is on the left. F McGowan stands in the centre. Location unknown. This image is a copy made by Godber of the print in his album, Vol 108, p 64 (PA1-q-101).

Inscriptions: Album page - top centre - No 449 (No. 4); Album page - bottom centre - Wh. 1884. Written off 1929.

Built in 1884 for the Wellington & Manawatu Railway Company (WMR No 4). Number changed to \"Wh\" 449 after New Zealand Railways purchased WMR at the end of 1908. It was written off on the 15th of August 1915, and sold. (Information from the `Register of New Zealand Steam Locomotives 1863-1971' by W G Lloyd, 1974, page 62.)
