This term replaces North Island Main Trunk Railway 5/05/1977 49:1281.

The sections of railway line from Wellington to Taumarunui and from Te Awamutu to Auckland. The section of the Main Trunk railway line between Taumarunui and Te Awamutu is known as Te Ara-o-Tūrongo.
