Description: Photograph album relating to Henry Beresford Maunsell's service during World War I, with the NZ Army 9th (Wellington East Coast) Mounted Rifles Regiment in Egypt. Many of the military personnel are identified, a few with later dates added noting when some of the men photographed in the album were killed in action. The first part of the album shows soldiers leaving on board HMNZ troopship 'Orari' 14 October 1914, the trip through Hobart, Colombo, Aden, Port Said until disembarkation in Alexandria December 1914. Many scenes show the shipboard stabling for horses used by Mounted Rifle troops; others show various ships they passed on the way. The latter part shows various military scenes in Egypt, including The New Zealand Corps camp near Cairo; swimming horses crossing the Nile; Red Cross Vauxhall ambulance; groups of soldiers riding camels; horse lines; and a line of horses at drinking troughs. Description: Photograph album compiled by Alexander Gillies, relating to his service with the YMCA (New Zealand Young Men's Christian Association) in Egypt and Palestine during World War One, 1916-1919. A small envelope stuck inside front cover is addressed to Miss Gillies, YMCA, Moray Place, Dunedin. All prints include captions that identify locations and people. Contains 12 prints relating to a garden party for 3,000 convalescing soldiers at Ezbekiah Gardens labelled “I” to “XII”. Prints show crowds of soldiers in conversation, eating lunch, and watching or participating in games (egg and spoon race, sack race, donkey rides). Prints also show the Ezbekiah Garden YMCA centre in detail (band rotunda, notices, decorations, tables, and chairs, plants), and other people at event (local Egyptians, a table of "Lady Helpers"). The print labelled “XI” includes an inscription on reverse saying “lighthouse about a mile from camp”. Two other prints depicting Ezbekiah Gardens show the notice board and two men at the entrance. Eight prints relating to the “Command Depot” at Sidi Bishr are labelled “I” to “VIII”. One print depicts convalescent officers in Gillies' “P.T. Class” (possibly meaning physical therapy class) and one print labelled "My Instructors" showing six men doing exercises outside a hut. Four prints show larger groups of soldiers doing exercises and parading during a review by Sir Reginald Wingate. Two prints show Wingate talking to his Aide-de-Camp, Major Owen, Colonel Alston, and Gillies. Remaining prints show nine people outside a YMCA tent and "Devotional Hut" at Zeitoun, a running race labelled “Egyptian Race”, and a group portrait of a Pierrot Troupe at Helouan. Description: Diary for the year 1916 with entries dated from 1 January to 31 December. Printed at Nile Mission Press, 37 Sharia Manakh, Cairo. Diary commences with Jackson, a member of the Machine Gun Section of the Mounted Rifle Brigade, in Cairo. Describes visit to pyramids and the Sphinx in January. Late January trek in desert via Zeitoun and to Suez and Ismailiya. Visit and inspection of camp by Prince of Wales, accompanied by General Godley in March. Jackson went on to Port Said and from there back to the Dardanelles. Describes the camps and military action at Hill 70, better known as Scimitar Hill. Later in the year the diary describes action in the Sinai Desert and life at camp in Kantara [El Qantara], Egypt. The diary includes a number of items originally laid in on page dated Wednesday, 19 April 1916: including a "Twenty-Five Piastres" banknote of "National Bank of Egypt", dated 7 June 1918; a holograph note in ink by Jackson to accompany two newspaper clippings dated 1958 describing the discovery of a message in a bottle thrown overboard from the troopship 'Willochra' departing Wellington on 15 August 1915. Includes pre World War One views taken in New Zealand; Lieutenant Colonel William George Malone in his dress uniform (possibly taken after his promotion to Lt. Colonel), assembled soldiers wearing lemon squeezer hats (possibly Territorial Force at camp), 11th Regiment (Taranaki Rifles) 1913, Ida Katherine, second wife, and son Maurice with others on wharf farewelling NZEF troops 14 October 1914 (taken by W.G Malone from troopship 'Arawa'. Description: Collection comprises two letters from Robert Garfield Quick (known as Garfield) to his sister Emma Quick written from Zeitoun, Egypt, during his service with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles in World War I. Also includes photocopy of Quick family history, some handwritten information about Garfield Quick, some newspaper cuttings, and some postcards dated between 1912 and 1915. One postcard is blank, the others are mainly from Garfield to Emma, but also include some to and from other siblings Jack and Girlie (Mary) Quick, as well as George Davidson and Gerald Mitchell. Also includes three commemoration cards, two with photographs attached. One with and one without a photograph of Garfield Quick, who died in action in 1917. The other one is from the parents of Colin James Ashworth thanking people for the sympathy expressed on the death of their son (1944). Description: This folder contains the war diary written by McRae from Jan to Sep 1915. At the front of the diary is a brief timeline of travelling dates from leaving Auckland in Sep 1914, through to arriving in Cairo on 5 Dec 1915. McRae's entries in the diary are brief. He describes his time at Zeitoun Camp, parades, training drills, and visits to the Egyptian Pyramids. McRae transfers with his unit to Ismalia on 26 Jan 1915. Comments on the attach of the Turkish Army at Suez Canal on 3 Feb 1915. Transported on the `Katuna' on 10 Apr 1915 to the island of Lemnos. Ship moves off ANZAC Cove on 24 Apr 1915. Details fighting and wounded until 4 May 2015 when he disembarks at ANZAC Cove and moves up to the firing line. Wounded in leg on 8 May 1915, wound dressed on beach the next day. Taken aboard transport with other casualties including Lieutenant-Colonel Plugge and Major Harrowell. Shipped to Malta via Alexandria to recuperate at St George's Hospital. McRae details life on Malta over the next month. Returns to Gallipoli and the front line on 25 Jun 1915. Involved in the battle of the Turkish Army's last major offensive against the ANZAC soldiers on 29 and 30 June 1915. Injured for a second time on 7 Aug 1915 during Auckland Infantry's attack in the ANZAC offensive which included the attack on Lone Pine and Chunuk Bair. Lay out without dressing for three days then carried down to shore. Medical attention the following day and transferred to a medical boat on 11 Aug 1915. En route to Malta the bullet was removed from his leg. Very few entries in the diary from this point. Leg operated on 19 Aug 1915, amputated 13 Sep 1915 (last entry). Description: Diary kept by Bayne while serving as a private in the Ruahine Company, Wellington Infantry Battalion, in Egypt and Gallipoli. The first pages comprise a listing of the officers in Malone's Wellington Infantry Battalion and a timeline of significant dates relating to the start of the First World War. Diary begins on 10 Aug 1914 as Bayne enlists at Dannevirke, is sent to Masterton for equipment and then onto the Awapuni Camp for military training. Further training at Trentham Camp then embarks aboard the `Arawa' to Egypt on 16 Oct 1914. Details shipboard life and gives accounts of the stopovers en-route, included a detailed account of the layover in Colombo. Arrives Alexandria 3 Dec 1914 and gives detailed account of the surrounding buildings, foods and local customs. Continues training at Zeitoun Camp until deployment to the Suez Canal on 25 Jan 1915. Returns to camp and describes living conditions, military life and operations. Diary entry for the "Battle of the Wozzer", 2 Apr 1915. Leaves Alexandria on 10 Apr 1914 aboard the transport `Itonus' for Gallipoli. 25 Apr 1915 is transhipped at 10.30pm to `HMS Bulldog' and taken half a mile from the beach before loading into rowing boats for the remainder of the ANZAC landing. Gives detailed narrative of the fighting and lists soldiers injured in the conflict. Comments on the failed attack on Monash Gully 2 May 1915, leaves Anzac Cove to fight at Cape Helles 6 May 1915. Diary ends 8 May 1915 with Bayne's involvement in preparing for the attack on Krithia. Also includes newspaper report of a memorial service held at Manakau for Bayne, and a newspaper cutting photograph of Private Bayne and New Zealanders on their way to Gaba Tepe. The newspaper cutting that accompanies this diary indicates that this diary was found on Bayne's body five months after his death. Details joining the Army on 20 Aug 1914, training at Addington and travelling to Wellington for embarkation on 16 Oct 1915. Recorded his vote for the 1914 New Zealand general election. Sailed aboard the `Tahiti' with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion. Comments on shipboard life, sea sickness, rifle exercises, general drills, fatigue duties and tug-of-war competitions between soldiers. Stopovers in Hobart and Albany. General Godfrey and staff tour the transport on 20 Oct 1915 in Albany. Notes sinking of the German Navy light cruiser `SMS Emden' by the Australian light cruiser `HMAS Sydney' in 9 Nov 1915. During stopover on 16 Nov 1915 in Colombo the `Tahiti' takes on board seven prisoners who served aboard the `SMS Emden'. Arrives Aden 25 Nov 1915 then continues onto Suez Canal. Comments on being paid in shillings and writing letters home. 26 Jan 1915 leaves Zeitoun Camp for the camp at Ismailia. Company relieves troops at El Ferdan to repel a possible Turkish attack on Suez Canal. Comments on number of Turkish prisoners taken on his return to Ismailia, and then back to Zeitoun Camp. On 16 Mar 1915 the troops were inspected by Sir Arthur Henry McMahon, High Commissioner in Egypt. Ten days later Constance notes that his false teeth are broken after chewing tough beef. On Good Friday, 2 Apr 1915 Constance is in Cairo and witnesses the riot in the Ezbekieh Quarter between local Egyptians and Allied troops, comments on the drunks and arrested men. Entrains to Alexandria on 10 Apr 1915 and sails on the transport `Lutzow' with the Canterbury Battalion to the port of Mudros on the Mediterranean island of Lemnos. At anchor in the harbour with daily trips to the island for marching practice, training and leave. 24 Apr 1915 transport heads to the Gallipoli Peninsula lead by the British dreadnought battleship `HMS Queen Elizabeth'. 11.00am on 25 Apr 1915 leaves the `Lutzow' landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula and straight into action. Records fighting up on the firing line. Constance continues to record his daily life of bombardments by the Turkish Army, sniper fire, manning the trenches, and coming off the front line to be relieved and take sleep wherever he could find it. 3 May 1915 writes that the men were being "slaughtered wholesale" and provides a detailed account of the New Zealand soldiers trying to retire from their position in the face of enemy fire. Following weeks settles into a routine of front line activity, fatigue duty at the beach, burying the dead and rest. 19 May 1915 Constance and his section are transported onto the HMS Reindeer and sailed a couple of miles along the coast, they come ashore once more and commence the digging of trenches. Returned to original bivouac on 22 May 1915. Notes the sinking of the `HMS Triumph' on 25 May 1915. 4 Jun 1915 Canterbury Infantry raided from Quinn's Post, next day a sortie against the enemy at German Officers' Trench opposite Courtney's Post. 15 Jun 1915 Constance competes in a bomb throwing competition. Constance's Company travel to Mudros for rest on 15 Jul 1915. Comments on the men being sick "as they had eaten too many luxuries". Returns to Anzac Cove and duty on Walker's Ridge. Involved in the heavy fighting during the first week of Aug 1915. Last entry on 15 Aug 1915 as a party of Constance's Company advances beyond the trench lines to take a fort but are driven back and have to retire. Last page of diary has two quotes from history. Description: Diary continues on directly from MSX-2541 with Malone discussing the sinking of the `Emden'. Describes very hot weather conditions and the effect on his soldiers. Gives a lecture to the men on military tactics. Comments on the suitability of some soldiers to their appointed ranks, his dislike of some onboard sporting competitions and crossing the Equator. Arrive Colombo 15 Nov 1914 and Malone provides a detailed account of vessels in harbour. Two day stop-over. Continues to detail shipboard life until the `Arawa' arrives in Aden on 25 Nov 1914, then onto Suez and Alexandria. Ends 6 Dec 1914 as Regiment prepares to leave Alexandria for Zeitoun.
