Pohaturoa Rock

A volcanic crag or "plug" of rhyolite rising 245m above the Waikato River near Atiamuri. It figures in the tribal narratives of both the Arawa and Ngati Raukawa people, and was often used as a lookout post during inter-tribal wars. Also known through the 1950s as "Mark Neale's haircut" a reference to Mangakino's barber. The pine trees were planted there as a joke in the 1930s when some of the pine planting gang found a way to get to the top of the hill.
