Rutland Stockade (Whanganui, N.Z.)

Built during the New Zealand Wars to defend Whanganui. Built in 1847, atop Rutland Hill (also known as Pukanamu or Sandfly Hill) in Queens Park. Stood until 1887, but by then the blockhouses were the only remaining visible evidence, the posts for the stockade having long been disposed of. It became a gaol in 1872.
