Description: Letter books of Carl Diercke 1872-1915, containing family and plantation correspondence, requesting food stuffs and sundry goods, which were mainly delivered by the ship Sumatra. Also, letters to Rudolf Diercke and others, and letters concerning publication of the English translation of Richard Parkinson' book, Thirty years in the South Seas Source of title - Supplied by Library Tinputz Plantation was set up in Bougainville by Carl Diercke 1872-1915. Description: Photographs of the Japaneses capitulation in South East Asia and the Pacific, particularly Bougainville in Papua New Guinea. They include a number of photographs of Japanese prisoners of war being marched to camps; the signing of surrender documents by Australian officers; painting Japan Surrenders on the underside of RAAF plane wings to inform Japanese forces; the announcement of the Japanese surrender by Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten in Singapore; the Duke of Gloucester, Governor General of Australia, visiting troops; a Japanese tank on fire; and earlier photographs of Allied forces on Bougainville in 1944. The photographs are nearly all official Royal New Zealand Air Force and are captioned on the reverse. Also included with the collection is a copy of New Zealand Freemason frm May 1977 which includes a photograph of the NZEF Masonic Association meeting in 1918 in France.. Description: Comprises letters from Archer to family and friends, mainly from Wuvulu Island, Manus District and from Jame Plantation in Buka 1923-1928; report on coastwatching activity, Bougainville, 1941-1943, by W J Read; his Solomon Islands war diaries, 1943; files arranged by Mrs Roberts, Archer's biographer, which contain aspects of Archer's post-war career, including papers on the planters' asscociations in New Guinea and Bougainville. Source of title - Supplied Archer came to New Guinea in 1923 and took over the former Jame Plantation at Buka, one of the ex-German plantations sold to returned soldiers. He served as coastwatcher in Bougainville during World War II and later with the Solomon Islands Defence Force. Description: Interview with Andrew Barkla, born in Hawera in 1920. Refers to growing up on a dairy farm at Manaia near Hawera. Recalls being conscripted into the Queen Alexandra's Mounted Rifles in 1940, having three months' initial training at Foxton, being manpowered back to the farm, and recalled later in the year when he volunteered for the Air Force. Mentions being posted by the Army to Second Taranaki Regiment, but being sent to the Air Force's Aerodrome Defence Unit at Bell Block. Comments that there was "a bit of a shambles" as military facilities were being established. Talks about being posted to Wigram and then to Unit 33 at Longburn to train as a radar operator, then joining Unit 59 which was being formed to go to the Islands. Refers to travelling on an American troopship to Guadalcanal in November 1942 and then on a loading ship tank to Bougainville in a convoy. Talks about setting up their radar station (Camp Tiki) in an American base for detecting Japanese aircraft approaching from Rabul, and how they worked and lived there under attack from bombers. Comments on being sent home on leave after 8 months, update training at Wigram, and posting to a radar station at Maunganui Bluff. Refers to the unit being disbanded in 1944 and being demobilised and sent back to the farm in March 1945. Reflects that his most memorable experience was the trip from Guadalcanal to Bougainville when their convoy was attacked by torpedo bombers at night and the ship was hit by a dud torpedo. Description: Interview with Clarence Brown, born in Auckland in 1924. Talks about being called up for the Air Force in 1942 when he was 18 and training at Levin and Wigram to be a wireless operator and traffic controller. Discusses going to Norfolk Island, New Caledonia and then to the New Hebrides where he was based at Henderson Base, Guadalcanal. Refers to New Zealand Hudsons flying day missions from the base. Discusses living conditions - mosquitoes, denge fever, bully beef, fermenting coconuts, lack of water, and boredom and their activities to relieve it. Comments on radar-controlled searchlights, and their gear rotting quickly in the conditions. Talks about the formation of a fighter wing of 36 aircraft, with 24 being kept serviceable. Refers to being a telephone operator. Talks about the base at Ondongo, and New Zealand planes escorting American planes in October 1943. Mentions the Catalina flying boats at Palagi that were used to pick up downed pilots. Discusses the period October 1943 to January 1944 when the Americans established a beachhead on Bouganville with three airstrips. Refers to going in by landing craft with their gear, the presence of Fijian troops, air raids, and American battleships shelling Japanese positions. Comments on support from P40 aircraft, the only Royal New Zealand Air Force aricraft engaging with the enemy in that area. Describes receiving a schrapnel wound in the eye, returning to Auckland for treatment, and eventually losing the eye.
