Description: Manawatu Catchment Board proposed flood control scheme for the lower Manawatu River, 1945. The plan outlines stage one of a five year plan of flood protection for the river from Whirokino to Ashurst. Shows flood protection river cuts, stopbanks, outfall drains, raised banks ponding areas, an alternative cut, as well as a 200 ft wide channel through Moutoa. Also shows a diagram above the map entitled 'Longitudinal profile along cut' that depicts the 1902 flood level, stopbank heights, low level bank heights, ground levels along the cut and the mean contruction level on the bottom of the cut. Description: Copy of a topographic map of the Wellington region from Port Nicholson and Paliser Bay following the Ruamahanga River to the Manawatu River to the coast at Foxton. The Rimutaka and Tararua Ranges are named as are rivers, bays, heads, some settlements, tracks and roads. Some sections are marked and pa sites. Wakefield, Tiffin and Kettle have made descriptive notes about the terrain, views and navigable rivers on the map as well as at the bottom of it. Note on catalogue card states: Photocopy of col. Description: The key sheet of the scheme for the Lower Manawatu River begins at the mouth of the river reaching as far as Ashhurst and the Pohangina River. The scheme for the Oroua River is also included, from the junction near Rangiotu to the vicinity of Feilding. Notes about proposed work are referred to in key. This base map has been used to indicate the flood of January 1953, ponded areas, overflows and ponded volumes, also referred to in a key. The four sheets held by the Alexander Turnbull Library are part of an enlargement of the key sheet and include greater detail of proposed and existing stopbanks, rock protection, willow protection, proposed cuts, existing and proposed levels, flood levels and the berm to be lowered. existing and proposed levels which are all referred to in keys. Description: Shows a couple seated on the ground in the centre, and a wooden shelter at the right. There are scattered trees, and hills in the background. The small figure is shaving the cheek of the taller one. Shows Ewehi and his wife Rora. Extract from Crawford's "Recollections of travel in New Zealand and Australia ...", London, Trubner, 1880, page 179: "Our captain's wife, the faithful Rora, was about three feet six inches in height, had a humpback, with legs and arms like whip-sticks. We called her the Ghoul. Peata expressed great surprise that such a lady had found a husband. She was most devoted to him, fondled him affectionately, attended to his pipe and his food; and I was much amused to see her performing the duties of barber, and giving her husband his Sunday's shave".
