Muemutu

Māori village and thermal area on a headland on the southern shoreline of Lake Rotorua, within Rotorua City, Western Bay of Plenty, about 1 km of the city centre. (from Wises New Zealand Guide). In Seaton album (PA1-o-460, p 3), Ohinemutu is named as Muemutu. Includes several marae.

Description: Photographs of New Zealand scenery taken by various photographs of whom Wheeler & Son and the Burton Brothers are identified. There are a number of images of Mount Tarawera and surrounds both before and after the eruption on 10th June 1886. A few other images show the volcanic areas around Whakarewarewa and Wairakei in the North Island; all the rest are in the South Island. Two interesting images show people transported across wide rivers by flying fox, one with a woman sitting in the `cage', across a river near Lake Wakatipu (probably Deep Creek or the Shotover, near Skippers), and one with two people crossing the Hooker River. Most of the views of people are distant views, but several near the end of the album show close-up views of men climbing on glaciers with ropes and ice picks. Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. Scenes include the arrival of the royal visitors at various places, by ship, Royal carriages, and Royal train; ceremonies and rites welcoming them; views of triumphal arches erected for the tour, including Marble Arch (Queen Street, Auckland), the Auckland Harbour Board Arch, the Citizen's Arch (Wellesley Street), and the Government Arch (City of Wellington). Other ceremonies are associated with the presentation of war-medals; the laying of foundation stones (Victoria College for Maori Girls, Parnell, Auckland), the Wellington Town Hall, and the Queens Memorial Statue in Dunedin); and the march past and inspection of various guards, troops and veterans. Description: Photographs of Hawai'i, Samoa and New Zealand, taken by various photographers circa 1880s and 1890s, including John Richard Morris, John Davis, F Finch and Josiah Martin. Inserted in an envelope is a hand-written list of photos, but these seem to bear no relationship to the album. The list includes places in New Zealand (none of which are in this album), Sydney, New South Wales, Brisbane, New Caledonia and Fiji (again none of which are shown in this album). The photographs of Hawai'i include Iolani Palace in Honolulu, and Queen Lili'uokalani; Samoan images show children, a waterfall at Falefa near Apia, and a group of dancers in traditional dress. Images of New Zealand include landscapes, Maori children, a hongi with two women, and a collage taken by Josiah Martin of images of Maori chiefs, waka and meeting houses at Parihaka and Ohinemutu.
