Artist unknown :[Mrs Marion Menzies Gibb, second wife of John Gibb. ca 1874].
A three-quarter length portrait of the wife of the artist John Gibb, dressed possibly in mourning with black jacket and skirt, and with a beaded white blouse with lace at throat and cuffs, and a gold brooch at the neck.
The subject may be in mourning because of the death of three (or four) of her children in Scotland in 1873. This consideration has influenced the dating of this work at ca 1874 (the family emigrated from near Glasgow in 1876). (See biographical notes at TL 3/1/1, 7 June 1978).
The frame was made by Rankin & Gray of Glasgow.
