Shows head and shoulders portrait of John Knowles, with white hair, moustache and side-whiskers, wearing white collarless shirt, and jacket and waistcoat.
John Knowles was teacher at the Congregational Church from 1853-1883 and died in 1891. The portrait may have been presented at the time of his death, or at the time of his retirement from the Sunday School. Thomas H. Barnes transferred from this congregation to the one at Courtenay Place in 1894 (according to Terrace Congregational Church minute book for 3 October 1894). He may have joined the Terrace Congregation at around the time that Mr Henry Barnes and family joined from Kidderminster - ie 19 December 1888- see minute book for that date).
