Shows the view from the entrance to valley, with a bush-clad hillside to the left and partly cleared land, the two so-called "Black Bridges" across the river, and a horse-drawn timber-waggon in the valley close to a house by the road

The two bridges were known as the Black Bridges due to periodic painting with tar.

Reproduced as a Turnbull Library Print in 1984, under the series title Wellington to the Wairarapa.

Provenance: Given by the artist (with a view of Upper Hutt Railway Station, Ref. no. C-030-030) to Mr Francis Howard Wilkie of Upper Hutt. Passed to Mr Wilkie's daughter and son-in-law, Mr & Mrs J. H. G. Paterson of Totara Park, Upper Hutt.
