Description: Photographs taken during Ernest Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition, 1907-1909, by an unidentified photographer. Many of the photographs refer to pages in Shackleton's book "The heart of the Antarctic: the farthest south" published soon after he returned to England. This album consists mainly of landscapes, many showing various depots established by the men, and many with different types of ice encountered by the explorers, including pack ice, brash ice, pancake ice, floe ice, snow bergs, icebergs and pressure ice. One photograph shows a party of three men at the Magnetic Pole. Alistair Forbes Mackay, Douglas Mawson and Professor Tannatt William Edgeworth David are seen on 16th January 1909 (at 3.30 pm), with Professor David announcing "I hearby take possession of this area now containing the Magnetic Pole for the British Empire". Description: Album of photographs relating to Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition between 1907 and 1909. All the photographs have full inscriptions, with people and places identified. (Names listed above). Two photographs of icebergs were taken at a different time (undated) by Captain Greenstreet when sailing the SS Rimutaka in the southern oceans (p 41). Photographs on pages 33-39 show the "at home" garden party at Te Hau o Te Atua (Breath of Heaven), the home of Shackleton's New Zealand agent Joseph Kinsey, on Clifton Hills. The party was given as a farewell to the members of Shackleton's expedition and ship's officers, on November 26th 1908. Photographs show both the group who ventured to Shackleton's "Farthest south" position, and also the group who went north to the magnetic pole. Towards the end of the album are a few stereoscopic photographs, some of which show the Nimrod while being towed by the Koonya. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Album of photographs taken by unidentified photographers during the British Antarctic Expedition, 1907 to 1909. The album contains 50 pages of which 21 pages are empty. This album consists mainly of portraits of the men (listed above except for Abrahams, given only with surname and not found in published material) Other topics are the Great Ice Barrier; Adelie and emperor penguins; Ross seals, Weddell seals and crab eater seals. Description: Photographs taken by undentified photographers of the beginning of Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition. The album begins with scenes on board Nimrod while still in London, including several with Shackleton's wife Emily, and two young children, Raymond and Cecily (her name given as Cecilia in this album). From London scenes of shipboard life are shown, ships escorting Nimrod out of Lyttelton Harbour en route to Antarctica, with partial views of the Koonya which towed Nimrod to save fuel. Many of the members of Shackleton's party are clearly identified, as are places. Views show weather conditions (including blizzards and their effect), the landing party, the hut at Cape Royds (exterior and interior living conditions), seals, penguins, ponies and dogs, natural walls of "kenyte" rock formations, icebergs, and various forms of ice crystals, ice flowers, and ice stalactites.
