Papers and correspondence of Peter Dane, including family documents and correspondence relating to his wife Gabriele and their children, relatives, and friends. Also includes literary materials, such as drafts of poems, and correspondence with other writers and artists, both in New Zealand and overseas. Other literary items include materials from the Russell Writing Group, and research materials relating to Dane's study of the poetry of John Donne. Additionally, the collection contains records of Dane's environmental activism, including Parliamentary submissions and correspondence with members of Parliament, as well as articles pertaining to environmental issues in New Zealand, such as pollution, energy policy, and genetic engineering.

Writer, poet, and environmental activist, Peter Dane was born in Berlin, emigrated to London in 1933, interned as an `enemy alien' in mid-1940 and taken to Australia where he spent two years in New South Wales. Dane was released and returned to England, and married Gabriele Herrmann in 1945, before moving to Kampala, Uganda for seven years. In 1961 he and his family moved to New Zealand, and he joined the faculty of Auckland University. He is the author of multiple books of poetry, and involved with Friends of the Earth, an environmental advocacy organisation.
