Thompson, Arthur Alfred, 1915-1997

Auckland commercial artist, set designer and puppet maker, who studied at Elam School of Art from 1928 to about 1934, coming under the influence of John Weeks and others. He met Arnold Goodwin and his business partner Albert Hooper in the mid-1930s and went to work for him at the commercial art firm Carlton Studios (which handled the accounts of Four Square, Oak brand (Thompson & Hills) and ETA peanut butter). He married Barbara Goodwin (daughter of Arnold Goodwin) in 1940 and after the war joined the Goodwin Marionette Theatre as designer / puppet maker / operator. This puppet group was a fulltime professional theatre employing six people and toured the main cities around New Zealand. In the early 1950s, New Zealand's first puppet film "Thrifty Nifty" featured puppets created by Arthur and Barbara. Arthur Thompson designed the Auckland Festival programme, posters and advertising in the mid-1950s, and began designing posters for Tasman Empire Airways Ltd and NAC, being employed at the time by W Haythorn-Thwaite Ltd. In 1961 Arthur went to the UK as designer for Shepperton Studios; and worked as a sketch artist for "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Road to Hong Kong". He returned to New Zealand in 1963; designed and built sets for TV commercials. He was appointed set designer at Mercury Theatre for a year in 1979.
