Description: Ian Hugh Finlayson born Hamilton 1936. Discusses family's first contact with Ngahinepouri - grandfather, David Finlayson and his father, settled at Karamu ca 1872. Explains origins of farm name, `Methleigh'. Recalls childhood jobs on farm and geographical features of properties. Talks about shearing; fencing and effect of electric fences; involvement in frozen beef trade to Britain; A & P and winter show beef competitions; sheep, mainly Romney, Perendale and Romney Cheviot cross; control of rabbits and diversification of land use in district. Describes secondary schooling at Kings College, Otahuhu; social activities for young couples; family home; grocery deliveries; outdoor recreation for children and Sundays as a child. Discusses interest in flying, getting private pilot licence in 1950s, learning mainly in Tiger Moths and interest in Gliding, representing New Zealand in World Championship in France 1978.
