The New Zealand Esperanto Society was formed in 1904 in Auckland, by a pioneer of the language, Roland W St Clair, with Alex S Russell as its first president. The growth of other Esperanto clubs led the Society to change its name in 1909 to the Auckland Esperanto Society, with an Auckland-based New Zealand Esperanto Association set up as the national body in 1910. In 1915 the Association went into recess, but was revived in 1929 with Dr C J Adcock as its president. The revived Association was domiciled in Wellington.
