- Pascoe, John Dobree, 1908-1972; Pascoe, Dorothy Gladys, 1917-2014
Photographs taken and collected by John Pascoe, documenting his early life, mountaineering and tramping, family life and holidays, and working life at Internal Affairs and National Archives.
His personal photograph albums include images of his family and ancestors, of him as a child, teenager, mountaineering student and young man. The many photographs of his own family include holidays taken during the 1950s in the Marlborough Sounds and on D'Urville Island. These include images for "Half a Day on a Mail Launch," of Te Towaka on Pelorus Sound where they stayed and camped more than once, of fishing and tramping expeditions, and local sports days. There are negatives recording a family trip to Mount Egmont in 1954, and raspberry picking Tapawera, Nelson, in January 1962. Another holiday taken in 1966 was over the new Haast Road which was still in the last stages of construction at the time. Other holidays include trips to the Wanganui Inlet in December 1971 and Milford Sound in 1972.
A group of photographs record a ski school on the slopes of mount Ruapehu in the 1950s. This includes building an igloo for one of the children.
Climbing trips include one to the Wilkin River in 1968, another to Ahuriri [River?] in 1968/1969, climbing trip to Gunn's Pass in March 1972, and an undated trip to Mount Aspiring and the Matukituki Valley.
Album pages record, from 1945 to 1948, building the house designed for John and Dorothy Pascoe by John's architect brother Paul. Throughout the collection are small groups of family photographs, most of them taken in the Pascoes garden.
Official photographs relate to John Pascoe's involvement in the New Zealand Centennial publication "Making New Zealand," and his term as the National Archivist.
