World Trade Organization

WTO

The only global international organisation dealing with the rules of trade between nations. Based in Geneva, Switzerland and established 1 January 1995 the WTO was created by the Uruguay Round negotiations (1986-94). It has a membership of 144 countries (as of 1 January 2002) and a budget for 2002 of 143 million Swiss francs. There is a secretariat staff of 550 and the organisation is headed by New Zealander, Mike Moore (director general).
