Description

As a labour and trade union historian, Bert Roth collected official records, private papers of trade unionists and politicians, ephemera, pamphlets and other publications. Although of the left, Bert Roth was never tied to any faction, and this enabled him to collect material from the whole field of industrial unionism and left wing politics. The collection consists of private correspondence, pamphlets, "underground publications", and the records and newspaper clippings of a wide range of trade unions and of political parties, from the Progressive Liberals to ephemeral radical organizations.

The trade union records consist of those of individual unions, many of which go back to the beginnings of unionism, and such union groupings as the Federation of Labour, Trade Union Congress, and the Knights of Labour.

Mr Roth's work as researcher and writer led to much of the material being arranged in "research folders", set around various topics. He also compiled a number of card indexes which record the histories and biographies of trade unionists, politicians, trade unions and political and cooperative organizations, and publications.

Most of the union and political publications have been transferred to the Serials Section.
