Haselden, John (Rev), 1854-1937

Born in London, but arrived in New Zealand with his family in 1860. They settled in the Kaipara area. He was ordained deacon in 1877, and ordained priest in 1879. In 1894, at the wreck of the "Wairarapa" on Great Barrier, he assisted at the scene for three weeks, recovering bodies and giving them a Christian burial. He was vicar of St Peter's Church, Onehunga 1897-1920. He was married to a daughter of Hon J A Gilfillan. (See NZ Biographies, vol 23, page 92 - newsclipping from Auckland star, 3 November 1937)
