Seaman and swagger. He was reportedly born in Latvia on 26 March 1878, and arrived in New Zealand on the British steamer Star of Canada, when it was wrecked at Gisborne on the night of 23 June 1912. For the next 53 years he tramped around much of the North Island, particularly Wairarapa and Manawatu. He died in Greytown hospital on 19 September 1968. His real name is uncertain. A swagger known as Russian Jack. Operated in the Manawatu/Wairarapa area ca1950s-1970s. Is buried in Greytown cemetery. Ivan Kruman was his name when he signed articles he wrote for the "Star of Canada", but this became anglicised as Jack Cruman.
