Incorporated in 1873 in Christchurch, to establish a regular cargo and passenger service between Britain and New Zealand. The shareholders, limited to New Zealanders, were in many cases members of freight associations. A London `Board of Advice' was also established. In 1880 financial control was transferred to London and the business reorganised. In 1912 the Company took controlling interest in the Federal Steam Navigation Company, which enabled it to enter the Australian trade. Both lines were taken over by P&O in 1916, but, supervised by the P & O Colonial Stock Trust, retained their own identities. Containerisation and regular air travel led to the absorption of the companies into the General Cargo Division of P&O in 1971. In 1973 all NZSC and FSN assets were amalgamated with P&O.
The passenger service ran from the set-up of the Company until 1969. The fleet was in the early days mainly chartered and sail driven. From 1883 steam ships were introduced to provide a reliable service for frozen meat exports. The London reorganisation in the 1880s led to the purchase of larger and more economic ships. The original Company practice was to use New Zealand mountain names for their ships.
