Kidson, Elsa Beatrice, 1905-1979

Soil scientist, sculptor. International reputation for her work in soil chemistry and plant nutrition; established the importance of trace elements in soils; world authority on Magnesium deficiency. Discovered link between colbalt deficiency in North Island volcanic areas and parts of Nelson & Southland and the wasting disease in sheep and cattle in these areas. Worked at the Cawthron Institute in Nelson for 34 years. After retirement developed her interests in sculpture, ceramics, and photography.
