Schaef, A W, 1867-1940

Wellington photographer and pionéer aviator. Born 1867 in Eaglehawk, Victoria, Australia; the son of Gustav Schaef and Katharina Schaef (née Voelgele). He had a studio in Greymouth in 1900, and in Wellington (at 9 Ingestre Street, later 111 Vivian Street) 1901-1939. Between 1909 and 1913 he built two unsuccessful monoplanes.
