Te Rangitahau, -1900

Tahau, -1900, Te Rangi Tahau, -1900

Ngāti Hineuru and Ngāti Tūwharetoa leader, often known as Tahau, who fought with Te Kooti until a disagreement in 1869. Son of Ngāwaka and Parekaui. He married Ngakiha Te Raukura and had two sons, Paora and Ranginui. In 1866 Te Rangitahau accompanied about 100 Ngāti Hineuru under Te Rangihiroa to Ōmarunui in Hawkes Bay, where they were attacked and defeated by General Whitmore. Te Rangitahau was among the prisoners deported to Wharekauri (Chatham Island). In 1868 he, along with other prisoners, escaped Wharekauri, led by Te Kooti. He fought alongside Te Kooti until 1869, when he defected after the raid at Ōpepe on 7 June. As Te Kooti advanced further into Ngāti Tūwharetoa territory, Te Rangitahau warned people between Waipahihi and Korohe to flee. Later reported at Ōhinemuri and Katitkati, he was living in Taupō in the 1880s.
