A prominent chief of the Ngati Mutunga, often known as Pomare Ngataa, born 1804?. He came to prominence during the migrations of the 1820s. Pomare initially settled at Kapiti and Waikanae and later relocated to Matiu island (Somes Is.) in Wellington. Pomare was the grandson of the Te Ati Awa chief Te Pakaiahi and Ngaturua, and son of Manukonga and Ehu (f. of Mokau). Pomare's half sister Te Hekenga named her son, Wi Naera Pomare, after her brother and Pomare senior raised the boy as his own (hei tamaiti whangai maana). Wi Naera Pomare was the father of Sir Maui Pomare. Pomare commandeered the brig Lord Rodney in 1835 and with other leaders led their people to settle the Chatham Islands where he died in 1851.
