Ralph, Thomas Shearman (Dr), 1813-1891

Artist, naturalist and early member of the Royal Society of NZ. In Wellington between 1851 and 1857. He was also one of the first to produce lithographs and etchings in Wellington between 1851 and 1857. He was trained in England as a Doctor of Medicine. He worked at Kew for more than 20 years and also spent time in Melbourne after his time in Wellington. Wrote Elementary botany for the use of beginners, first published London 1849 and republished Melbourne 1862, and papers on the exotic flora of the Melbourne district (Ref. Australian National Botanic Gardens biography online). He wrote on the tree ferns around Wellington and collected the type specimen of pittosporum ralphii at Patea (Ref. Meanings and originals of botanical names of New Zealand plants - Marie Taylor).
