Godber, James, 1848-1925

Son of Mary and Enoch Godber. Sheffield-born Godber arrived in Wellington in 1863 and learned the baker's trade with his cousin Joe Dixon. Married Julia Milner, and had two daughters and one son. Built up a well-known bakery and pastrycook business in Cuba Street. He also opened a light luncheon and tea rooms in Skerrett & Wylie's Buildings, Lambton Quay in 1902. A Wellington City Councillor, 1901-1909 and 1911-1919.
