Mayne, Tom, 1910-1988

Tom Mayne, cartoonist, was born 1910 at Studholme Junction (near Waimate). Parents were Robert John Mayne and Winifred Wickerby. Both were of Irish descent. Mother died when Tom was 18. Father farmed at Studholme Junction, Clandeboy, (near Temuka) and Styx, Christchurch. Tom was a pupil at Temuka High School. As a teenager he was employed by Millers, a drapery shop in Christchurch. From there he was promoted to manager positions in Fairlie, Geraldine and Westport. In 1940 he married Margaret Miller. 1941 he left NZ to serve in 27th Machine Gun Battalion. He returned in 1944. Did not play a sport but was a born entertainer. He formed a Hawaian Quartet with banjo, eukulale and guitars and played for dances. From 1939 until he went overseas he conducted many community singing contests to raise money for the cause. He had an excellent singing voice, played the musical saw and the piano accordian. While in hospital during the war, he made a talking (ventriloquist) doll called 'Jerry' which is now in the Waiouru War Museum. He and Jerry did a lot of entertaining of the troops. He was a wonderful gardener with a passion for roses and dahlias, was a good husband and good father to his children, Carol and Peter. While in hospital overseas he asked a nurse for paper and pencil and began doodling. His first cartoon was 'I am not doing my scone'. The nurses suggested he submit it to the NZ Forces paper and after some persuasion one of the nurses took it to the editor. The result was that he was asked to do more and thus his cartooning career began. Back in NZ he returned to shop work in Levin for five years and then returned to more shop work in Christchurch. He was not enjoying shopwork. One day Margaret (wife) suggested that he take a cartoon to Mr George Burns, the editor of the Christchurch Star Sun. To his amazement he was invited to submit four cartoons a week (for which he was paid) with the proviso that only one or two a week might be used. Most were done in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It was when he found his forte drawing sporting cartoons that he felt completely satisfied with his efforts. For the major rugby games required for the 'Saturday Sports' he had to submit three cartoons, one for a draw, one for a win and one for a loss because there was no time between the game and the publishing time of the paper. In 1986 Tom had major chest surgery for lung cancer. During his convalescence he began painting, something that he had always wanted to do. Unfortunately in 1988 the cancer re-occured, but he was able to enjoy his own roses, skillfully arranged by his sister. Biography submitted by Tom Mayne's wife, Margaret in 2006.
