Wilson, Gordon Francis, 1900-1959

Government architect, Ministry of Works. In 1936 Wilson was appointed to the staff of the Public Works Department, where he held the positions consecutively of Housing Architect, Chief Housing Architect, Assistant Government Architect, and finally Government Architect. This department was at one time named the Department of Housing Construction. In 1948 he was awarded the New Zealand Institute of Architects' Gold Medal for the design of the Dixon Street Flats. (See biographical article in the "Encyclopedia of New Zealand" (1966)). Designed the Nelson College scriptorium and memorial which was erected in 1956. The State flats on the Terrace, which he designed and which were originally named Terrace Flats, were renamed Gordon Wilson Flats after his death.
