Printer, commercial artist, artist and art teacher. Director of University of Canterbury Arts School. Son of William Sidney Smith and his wife Mary Jane Cumberworth. In 1908 the family name was changed to Lovell Smith (later hyphenated). Married Rata Alice (née Bird; 1894-1969). See DNZB (Vol 4, 1921-1940, p290-291, L13)
