New Zealand newspaper industry organsiation which shared and distributed local news amongst its member newspapers. Established under this name in 1942 to stress the national scope of the service. Known as NZPA.
Originally known as the United Press Association, an organisation formed in 1879 from the combination of the two competing news agencies, the Press Association and the Press Agency. Membership numbers flucutated from 26 in the 1880s, to 71 in 1907, and 74 by 1918. Vy 2011, the numebr had dropped to 26 again.
Maintained an Australian office in Sydney (1888-mid 1950s, 1963-circa 2011), and Melbourne (1956-1963). Also a London office from 1942; an office in Asia (Singapore, and Hong Kong) and Washington DC. Overseas offices were closed in the late 1990s to early 2000s.
NZPA closed in 2011.
