McEwen, John Malcolm, 1915-2010

Senior civil servant within Maori Affairs Dept, author, linguist; (see Rangitane, by J M McEwen 1986 for biographical details) (WWNZ 11th ed). He trained as a lawyer, and was administrator of Niue Island and compiler of a dictionary of the Niuean language. Pianist for Ngati Poneke Young Maori Club. Registered at birth as Jock and always known as Jock, although his baptismal certificate mistakenly named him John. See Dominion Post Obituaries, (Saturday May 22, 2010, B7).
