Hinerangi, Sophia, 1832-1911
Ngāti Ruanui. Born in 1832, at Kororareka. Second daughter of Alexander Gray and Kotiro Hinerangi. Baptised Mary Sophia Gray, at Kororareka in 1839. Married about 1851 to Koroneho (Colenso) Tehakiroe, and again in 1870 to Hori Taiawhio, with whom she came to Te Wairoa. Principal tourist guide of the Pink and White Terraces at Lake Rotomahana before the eruption of Mt Tarawera in1886. She guided for about 16 years before the eruption of which she had a premonition. She sheltered 62 people in her whare. After this she moved to Whakarewarewa, and guided there. Sophia Street in Rotorua bears her name.
