Puketapu, Kara, 1934-

Te Atiawa; educational background and international experience as appendix to report in 97-081-12/13. Joined the public service 1953 as a social science cadet. Petone rugby player, Wellington represenative and selected Maori All Black. Gained BA in Geography in 1960 and awarded Harkness Fellowship in 1967, graduated with an MA from the University of Chicago. In 1968 he lectured at the University of New Mexico and studied Pueblo Indian communities. He joined the State Services Commission in 1969; his subsequent positions included posting to London where he restructured the High Commission's administrative office. From 1975 directed the management audit project of government departments. Waiwhetu Marae trustee and appointed secretary of Maori Affairs (1977 - 1983).
