Clerk in Supreme Court office, Wellington. Wrote to Donald McLean from Wellington in 1858 re trading expedition to Chatham Islands. Born Edinburgh, July 1831 and probably arrived in New Zealand in 1854. Father of five sons and three daughters. One son was artist Joseph Stuart Allan, another was poet and novelist Alexander Allan, author of City of the Plains (Wellington, 1894) and Lays and lyrics; ramblings in New Zealand, (Paisley, 1915). Died 27 January 1900 and had lived in New Zealand 46 years, according to his death certificate.
