Paton, Harold Gear, 1919-2010

Photographer. In the 1930s he was a cadet photographer with the Auckland Star. He joined New Zealand Army in 1940, and took many photographs of the North African and Syrian Campaign. Paton returned to New Zealand in 1943 and was employed as an Army cinematographer in the Pacific. After the war he rejoined the Auckland Star before establishing a number of business ventures. He returned to the newspaper in 1953, and was appointed chief photographer in 1956. He held this position until his retirement in 1979.
