"H" 204, an H class steam locomotive, type 0-4-2T, built by Neilson. Standing on the step of the engine is R (Bob) Clark; and in the cab is R (Bob) Hope. Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber.
An original print from this negative is at PA1-q-101 (Godber album vol 108, page 22). The album includes a blueprint of the specifications for this locomotive.
A Fell engine, built by Neilson & Co., Glasgow (maker's no 3468/86), which entered service on the 9th of August 1886 and was written of in March 1956. It was equipped with Joy's radial valve gear on the \"outside\" engine. (Information from the 'Register of New Zealand Steam Locomotives 1863-1971' by W G Lloyd, 1974, page 53, and 'Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives' by A N Palmer & W W Stewart).
An original print of this image is in Godber Album Vol 108, p 22 (PA1-q-101), where the two men are identified. Inscription on the right of the image reads: H 204 as originally. R Clark. R Hope. Inscription on the back of the print reads: H 204 Cross Creek. Bob Clark in cab. Bob Hope on step.
