Te Kuka, active 1828-1864

Te Kuha, active 1828-1864, Te Mea, active 1828-1864

Ngati Rangi chief. Fought in the East Coast campaign. Painted by Robley in 1864 [A-080-064/065] (who identified the sitter as Te Kuha), and notes on the back of the paintings state that Te Kuha was a "carver of repute" and about 85 years old at the time. Robley notes that Te Kuha's tattooing may have been started in 1800 and he had an "uncommon mark on the centre of the nose". According to Robley, Te Kuha took the name Te Mea in 1828 in compliment to Captain Mair. The name Te Kuka is the form by which the whanau knows the sitter; he was named after the sharp flax or toetoe leaves used to torture his ancestor Tauaiti, by Ngati Ranginui.
