Kohere, Mokena, 1812?-1894

Correspondent to Donald McLean regarding conflict between Maori and colonial troops on the East Coast, Ngati Porou leader, assessor, politician. Son of father Pakura and mother Moahiraia, possibly born 1812?. The name Mokena was taken from CMS missionary John Morgan. His first wife was Erana Umutaru. For 50 years he was married to Marara Hinekukurangi. Member of Legislative Council, 1872-1887. He is believed to have been in his 80s at the time of death.
