Moran, Joseph Bruno, 1874-1952

Commercial artist. Born in Manchester, he started his career as a textile designer. He came to New Zealand in about 1911, and after a time was employed by the Auckland Star as a commercial artist. In 1919 he started his own business in the Palmerston Buildings opposite the Auckland Post Office. His clients included: Harvey & Company, Clark & Matheson, Smith & Caughey, John Weeks Ltd, F Duncan & Co (postcards & tourist goods), Johnsons Ltd (tea), Household Necessity Company, Brett Printing Company, Roma Tea Company, Abel Dykes, Wilson & Horton. In 1920 he designed an illuminated address from the Legion of Frontiersmen for the visit of the Prince of Wales (later held at the Art Gallery in Manchester). In 1925 he worked for the Banks Box Company in Wellington. In 1927 he returned to Auckland, and in July 1931 was employed as head of the Art Department at the New Zealand herald in the commercial printing section; he remained there until 1952. He was a craftsman of distinction in both watercolours and oils, also expert in lithographic work. He retired from the Herald three months before his death, at the age of 78. (From notes of daughter Mrs K M Marsh-Wildgoose, who lodged some of his artwork with Auckland Art Gallery in 1976. Copies of notes supplied to ATL by Auckland Art Gallery in 2005).
