Rochefort, John, 1832-1893

Surveyor, engineer. Born Bayswater, London. Trained as an engineer under Isambard Brunel. Left England aged 19 in 1851. Carried out survey work for the Government in the Wellington Region, then walked to Napier to work there. Worked in Australia, 1852, then returned to England, 1853 and back to New Zealand in 1854 with other family members. Took up land at Riwaka, then engaged in further surveying from 1857. He crossed to the West Coast via the Hurunui Saddle in 1859 and via the Buller Gorge in 1865. Lake Rochfort and Mount Rochfort close to Westport are named for him. He was associated with Julius von Haast. He married twice in Nelson, the first time in 1863, the second in 1867 to Amelia Susan Lewis. Brother of James Rochfort (1840-1924). Working with Railways in Wairarapa 1871. He was commissioned to survey the central route of the North Island Main Trunk line, establishing his base at Ohakune in the 1880s.
