Nairn & Sons Ltd

Christchurch seed business and nursery begun by David Nairn around 1879, when an acre of ground was bought on Lincoln road. The firm managed well during the depression of the 1880s. The "Press" newspaper reported in 1935 that "Very many of the trees and shrubs in the Christchurch parks were reared by the Nairns, and very many were given to the city by the firm. Every Japanese maple in the gardens was a gift to the city. Mr James Young, during his 20 years as Curator of the Botanic Gardens, chose freely from the extensive stocks of the Lincoln road nursery, taking shrubs of all kinds and many novelties to furnish the gardens under his control". David Nairn died in 1916, but his son Robert took over and was managing the business in 1935. The business was still advertising in 1945.
